History of Wolverine Camps:  In the early 1900's The State of Michigan utilized the current camp property as a State Fish Hatchery.  By the 1940's the hatchery had run its course and the building and 360 acers were acquired by Charlie "Moose" Peterson.  Charlie was very active in the conservation and education of Michigan's nature through the Boy Scouts of America and other wildlife and nature orgainzations.  He took the time and energy to convert some of the buildings into housing that would be utilized for many years by sportsmen and nature enthusists.  In the Mid 1960's John Zimmerle met Charlie while cross country skiing with a group of students in northern Michigan.  John was an educator / admistrator who was dedicated to getting students into the out-of-doors for education and recreation.  John and Charlie began a friendship that led to John and his wife Beryl purchasing the 360 acre property and buildings.  In 1968 John and Beryl started their first Wolverine Camps summer camp with Boys Basketball.  Over the past 47 years the summer camps have focused on developing a students foundation of talent through fundamental skills education, training and character building.  Develop the whole person not just the player.  Todays camps for boys and girls include Basketball, Soccer, Cross Country Running, Instrumental Music, and Visual Arts.  In the early 1970's the Wolverine Outdoor Education Center, Directed by Don Pocklington, was added to give Michigan elementary, middle and high school students an up-close and in-depth look into Michigan history, wildlife, ecology and adventure.  This program continues today with Outdoor Education available in the Fall, Winter and Spring for students from 2nd through 12th grades.  The Centers class selection, talented and ehthusiastic instructional staff, will help both teachers and students learn and grow, all while meeting the Michigan Core Curriculum standards.  So feel free to contact us for more information or schedule a camp tour to learn more about the "Wolverine Experience"!
